Hazardous Cargo

IMPORTANT HAZARDOUS CARGO/MATERIAL ROUTE DIRECTION

ALL Hazardous Cargo ("HC") and Cargo Tankers are prohibited from the Boston Tunnels (underground highway system).

Hazardous Cargo MUST EXIT INTERSTATE 93 NORTH AT EXIT 18 and INTERSTATE 93 SOUTH AT EXIT 26.

There are HC trailblazers through the City of Boston to direct HC off Interstate 93 North and South prior to entering the Tunnels and back on to Interstate 93.

The Hazardous Cargo/Material trailblazer routes are:

Southbound I-93 Boston Hazardous Cargo/Material Tunnel Detour

  • Take I-93 South bound to exit 26 (Storrow Dr./North Station)
  • From exit 26, take a right onto Nashua St inbound (towards the TD Banknorth Garden)
  • From Nashua St. take a left onto Lomasney Way
  • From Lomasney Way, take a left onto Causeway St.
  • Follow Causeway St., go past the TD Banknorth Garden and turn right onto North Washington St. 
  • Follow North Washington St. southbound and remain straight past the Haymarket MBTA Station.  North Washington St. becomes Surface Road southbound. 
  • Follow Surface Rd. southbound to Purchase St.
  • Continue on Purchase St. southbound until it becomes Surface Rd. again.
  • Continue straight on Surface Rd.
  • At Surface Rd and Kneeland St. proceed south onto I-93 Southbound.

Northbound I-93 Boston Hazardous Cargo/Material Tunnel Detour

  • Take I-93 North bound to exit 18 (Mass. Ave)
  • From exit 18 continue north on Frontage Rd. to the intersection of Frontage and Broadway.
  • Proceed north onto the South Station/Downtown on ramp.
  • At the end of the ramp proceed straight onto Atlantic Ave northbound.
  • Follow Atlantic Ave northbound, at Christopher Columbus Park remain straight onto Cross St.
  • Continue straight onto North Washington Street and remain heading north towards Charlestown, going over the North Washington Street Bridge.
  • Continue straight onto Rutherford Avenue towards Sullivan Square.
  • Proceed onto I-93 Northbound adjacent to the Assembly Square on-ramp in Somerville.
